Pool deck resurfacing means applying a new coating system over the existing concrete around a pool instead of tearing it out and pouring new slab. The deck is cleaned and mechanically prepared, cracks, joints and damaged areas are repaired, and then a coating goes down with a textured finish that keeps grip when the surface is wet. Around a pool, three things matter more than anywhere else: slip resistance for bare feet, resistance to sun, water and pool chemicals, and a surface that does not get uncomfortably hot, which is mostly a question of color. It runs about $6 to $14 per square foot installed for pool decks and exterior surfaces, estimated; the final price depends on the condition of the concrete, the repairs it needs and the system. If the deck sits over living space or has a leak problem, it becomes a waterproofing job, and we treat it that way.
The signs are usually visible: a surface that has gone smooth and slippery, paint or old coating peeling, spalling and small craters, cracks that keep coming back, or a deck that has simply faded and stained. Most of the time the concrete underneath is sound and can be kept, which is what makes resurfacing cheaper than demolition.
When the slab itself is broken or has moved, a coating will not fix it. We check that first, on site, before recommending anything.
A pool deck is walked on wet and barefoot, so the finish has to be textured. The texture is part of the system, not an afterthought: it is built into the coating or broadcast into it, and its level is chosen for how the area is used. A glossy, smooth finish that looks good in a garage is the wrong choice next to a pool.
Florida sun on a dark surface makes it hot to walk on. Lighter colors stay noticeably more comfortable than dark ones, which is why most pool decks go in light greys, sand and white tones. The topcoat also has to hold up to UV so the color does not fade or amber.

Vinyl flakes broadcast into the wet resin, then sealed. Hides dust and tire marks better than any solid color — the usual pick for garages. A heavier broadcast gives a full, granite-like texture with more grip, which is what holds up around pools and service areas.
A penetrating or film-forming sealer against oil, salt and water. The cheapest thing you can do to make a slab last longer.

It should not be. A pool deck coating is finished with texture precisely so it keeps grip wet and barefoot, and the level of texture is chosen for the area.
In most cases, yes: that is what resurfacing is. If the slab is broken, has moved or has a structural problem, a coating will not solve it, and we tell you so after the inspection.
