An epoxy flake floor, also called a chip floor, is a resin system with colored vinyl flakes broadcast into the base coat while it is still wet, then scraped and sealed under a clear protective topcoat. The flakes hide dust, tire marks and small imperfections in the slab, and the texture they leave gives more grip than a smooth, glossy floor. That is why it is the most requested system for garages, and why it also works on patios and driveways. Flakes can go down as a partial broadcast, with some base color showing between them, or a full broadcast that covers the base completely. It runs about $6 to $10 per square foot installed, estimated; the final price depends on the slab, the preparation and the size of the area. With proper care, a well-installed flake floor lasts about 10 to 15 years.
The same system has two densities. In a partial broadcast, flakes are scattered over the base coat and some of the base color shows between them: a lighter, speckled look. In a full broadcast, flakes are applied until the base disappears, which gives a denser pattern, more texture and a floor that hides almost everything.

Flakes come in blends: greys and blacks for garages that hide tire marks, warmer blends for patios, and custom combinations. The floor in the photos below is a grey blend over a driveway and patio with artificial turf strips between the slabs, with a before photo of the same bare concrete.
Outside, the floor takes sun and rain. The system has to be chosen for that: a UV-stable topcoat so the color does not amber, and a texture that keeps grip when the surface is wet. The slab also matters more outside, because exterior concrete often has cracks, joints and moisture that need repair before any coating goes down.
