The short answer
A metallic epoxy kit can work on a small, clean, dry slab if you accept a learning curve and a result that may not look like the photos. A metallic floor depends on three things a kit cannot provide: diamond grinding and a moisture test, a smooth, level base and experience moving the pigments while the resin is liquid. A professional metallic floor runs about $8 to $15 per square foot, estimated.
What makes metallic harder than other epoxy
- The pattern is made live. The pigments are moved by hand and with tools while the resin is liquid, and they keep moving until it sets. There is no pause button.
- It shows everything underneath. A glossy metallic floor highlights ridges, patches and dips in the slab that a flake floor would hide.
- Mixing and timing. Batches have to be mixed and poured in sequence so there are no visible seams or lap marks.
- Air and dust. Bubbles, footprints and dust stick in a glossy, self-leveling surface.
Where DIY metallic floors go wrong
- Poor preparation: etched or only cleaned concrete, so the floor peels or bubbles.
- Moisture from below, which can make the coating lose its bond.
- An uneven base, which shows as waves under the gloss.
- Pattern problems: blotches, seams between batches or a look that is flat instead of deep.
- The wrong place: metallic in full sun without a UV-stable topcoat can amber over time, and in wet areas without texture it is slippery.
When a kit makes sense
- A small room or a practice area where the look is not critical.
- A new, clean, dry and flat slab.
- You are comfortable redoing it if it does not come out as you hoped.
When to call a crew
- Living rooms, receptions, showrooms or any space where the floor is the design.
- Slabs with cracks, patches, old coatings or moisture.
- Larger areas that need several batches poured in sequence.
